The Curriculum

With over 50 years of experience, International House continues to adhere to the highest standards of language training and student services. We are dedicated to providing students with highly trained and experienced teachers and, the most up-to-date learning material available.

20 lessons a week of 60 minutes each, 6 different class levels, a professional, experienced and qualified team of English teachers, all working together to bring students one of the best ESL teenage curricula. This year, we have introduced a fourth elective class where students can choose from TOEFL, Journalism, Arts and Drama, and Health and Sports. Our classes are focused on improving students’ conversational, grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing skills, through communicative Language Teaching methods. Within these methods, the emphasis is placed on creating opportunities for communication. Interaction, real-world concepts and individualized instruction, all promote additional opportunities for communication that may not otherwise exist in a standard classroom setting.

Our program reflects our commitment to a multicultural learning environment and controlled student to teacher ratios. Our typical class size ranges from 10 to 12 students, with a maximum of 15 students per class. When structuring our classes, we take into consideration three criteria: English level, age and nationality. Our teachers are TESL Canada certified or hold a Bachelor of Education degree, and are all trained prior to the commencement of the program on the following program aims.

Our English Classes incorporate the following goals and practices:

  • Classroom management techniques; specifically effective with ESL learners
  • Design lessons to emphasize group or pair work
  • Regularly review learning goals and objectives with students
  • Increase opportunities for students to learn and use language in context with the learning process
  • Link communicative tasks with curricular goals as the central organizing theme of the lesson and unit planning
  • Include content from other disciplines whenever possible as a vehicle for language development

At the end of each week, all students are required to write an assessment test in order to monitor their progress. Upon completion of the program, both parents and students will receive a report card, and students will receive an International House certificate of completion.
